WHY MOTOR DRIVE UNIT?
- Mechanism
MOTOR DRIVE UNIT
The drive mechanism is built with a specialised series of gears to ensure smooth operation. The uniform mounting and drive geometry significantly enhances fitment.
The housing made of corrosion-resistant cast aluminium makes it perfect for any environment, even the most extreme operating conditions. The mechanism is tested for IP-56 Protection, and a special housing is available for IP-66 as well. The motor drive is built with all necessary safety features.
EMR is also equipped to provide additional electrical features, if required, in the motor drive unit. On-site solutions with integrated electronics for direct regulation and monitoring of on-load tap changers and transformers can be built and integrated into the motor drive.

Motor Drive Unit - frequently asked questions
What is a motor drive unit in an OLTC system?
A motor drive unit is the electric actuation mechanism that drives the on-load tap changer to higher or lower tap positions. It ensures precise OLTC motor drive system operation for automatic and stable transformer voltage control.
Why is a high-reliability motor drive unit critical for OLTC operation?
A high-reliability motor drive unit ensures accurate tap positioning and consistent switching performance. This reduces OLTC failure risk, minimizes unplanned transformer outages, and protects switching components from mechanical stress.
How does an OLTC motor drive system support automated voltage regulation?
The OLTC motor drive system receives control signals from voltage regulators and executes tap changes automatically. This maintains voltage stability while reducing manual intervention and operational errors in substation environments.
What types of motor drive units does EMR offer for OLTC applications?
EMR supplies AMD, EMD, and MA7 motor drive units engineered for different OLTC duty requirements. All units comply with IEC 60214, ensuring standardized performance, operational safety, and predictable maintenance cycles.
Why should utilities specify IEC 60214-compliant motor drive units in transformer procurement?
IEC 60214 compliant motor drive units are specified when utilities require assured OLTC safety, verified endurance testing, and long-term reliability for critical grid and industrial transformer installations.
