Protect Transformer & OLTC from damage

WHY PROTECTIVE RELAY?

Protect Transformer
Transformers are one of the most essential and expensive elements in the Power systems. Failure of Transformers or its accessories will lead to power outages and repairing of the same will be time consuming and expensive process. Hence, protecting the Transformers and its accessories from failure is of utmost importance in the smooth functioning of the Power system.
  • Oil Surge Relay (OSR)

PROTECTIVE RELAY

Protect Transformer & OLTC from damage

The Protective Oil Surge Relay (OSR) operates on the principle of Oil turbulence. OSR mounted in the Pipeline connecting Conservator and On-load tap-changer (OLTC). Under normal conditions, the oil flow rate through the OSR will be in control. Any faults occurring in the OLTC will lead to the Pressure buildup, which results in Oil turbulence. The increased Oil flow rate beyond the safe limit through OSR will trip the Transformer and thereby safeguarding the Transformer and OLTC.

OSR is suitably designed and tested to function at extreme environmental conditions and at intensive seismic levels.

Protective Relay - frequently asked questions

What is an OLTC protective relay in transformer protection systems?

A protective relay is a safety device designed to detect abnormal operating conditions and initiate transformer tripping. It protects  OLTC from damage caused by internal faults.

A protective relay safeguards OLTC systems by detecting fault-induced oil turbulence and pressure rise. This prevents severe mechanical damage and limits fault escalation inside the transformer.

The Protective Oil Surge Relay operates on the principle of oil turbulence in the pipeline between the conservator and OLTC. When abnormal oil flow exceeds safe limits due to OLTC faults, the OSR initiates transformer tripping.

Internal OLTC faults create pressure buildup and increased oil flow through the OSR. When flow exceeds controlled operating levels, the PROTECTIVE RELAY activates tripping to safeguard the transformer and OLTC.

OSR-based protective relay systems are specified when transformers operate under critical grid conditions requiring rapid fault isolation. They are designed to perform reliably under extreme environmental and high seismic conditions.
